What A Difference A Year Makes
May 12, 2009
May last year:

Yesterday:

Occasionally I am still overwhelmed by a wave of blind panic that I’m not growing enough, that I won’t have anywhere near enough flowers to fulfil the promises I am making and that I will bankrupt myself by buying in flowers, which I will end up selling at a loss!
But then I think about how many blooms there were just a few weeks after the top picture was taken and compare it with the way the plot is looking now and I have to do a little jig!

Well, those are pictures to tell a professional from an amateur. I’d be happy if I’d see that kind of progress in 10 years in my garden…

Thanks, Camellia, but I think it is a case of strength in numbers – normally you buy one plant, wait for it to grow big enough to divide and then years later you have a magnificent display. Plant a whole row and see how quickly it looks good!

what a difference. Are most of them perennials? Do you do a lot of autumn sowing of annuals.?
remember I asked about pinching snapdragons? well, I decided to sit on the fence, I pinched some and left others non pinched.I’ll let you know which was best.I thought the worst that can happen is that some will flower later ….and is that bad?
Do you have a watering system? I have had to buy trickle tape and set up a system. We havnt had proper rain for weeks. I realised that next year I will be hopefully marketing stuff and growing as well and wont have time for standing around with a hosepipe. This year I have had the luxury of just growing and not having to worry about anything else.
I hope its a good year for you.

Hi, Barbara. I am growing more perennials this year – the verbascum in the front of this year’s picture was started from seed last year, didn’t really do anything of note last year but has surprised me with its beauty this year. I am also very keen on biennials – the sweet rocket in the back of the picture has looked magnificent every since I planted it out in September, despite what the winter threw at it!
As for watering, we in the South West are blessed (?) with a lot more rain than I imagine you get in Norfolk! After the seedlings first go out, when they get a good soaking, I try to water as little as possible to encourage the plants to root deeply. For the most part it works. Mind you, I haven’t been through a hot summer yet… We’ll see!

Jan, jig away! Fantastic. All that hard work has really paid off.
